Four Corners Banquet

The 2000 FOUR CORNERS BANQUET was held on Saturday, February 19th, at the Ontario Airport Marriott in Ontario, CA. There were over 50 attending this year's annual event. Out of town guests gathered for snacks and drinks from 3:00pm to 4:30pm which was very nice. Gave everyone an opportunity to "Meet and Greet" before the evening event.

We were honored to have John Hermann from the San Diego area as our guest speaker. He is known as "King of the Alps". Has traveled the Alps several times and has written a couple books about his adventures. He provided a beautiful slide show along with his stories. It was interesting to see the American Flag flying at some of the restaurants and we also caught pictures of some US Bikes. Everyone enjoyed his presentation just wish we had more time to visit with John.

We had guests from out of state and some of them rode in on their bikes. Saturday night was beautiful and we were able to use the extended patio because the weather was so great. However, Sunday morning was a little different story. In fact, our Speaker, John Hermann, left very early to get back to San Diego to have breakfast with the BMW Club and as he left at 6:00A.M. it was starting to rain. Richard Rohlf and his wife were headed back to Round Rock, Texas, and the rains were coming down quite nicely. They packed their BMW, had their rain gear and headed east on I-10 hoping to outrun the rains. Watching the forecast for the day, it looks like they may have had rain most of the way home. We also had a couple riders, on bikes, out of Washington and Oregon that had rain most of the way up the coast. Good news is everyone arrived alive at their homes. Just another day of riding in the rain.

We were also honored to have Marti Luciano join us from Plano, Texas. Marti is one of the original finishers of the Four Corners Tour. We also had Kay Carlberg join us. Both ladies worked the reservation table. As you know Kay Carlberg and her late husband Dennis were Four Corners Chairman for several years. Dennis passed away in August of 1999. We did have a moment of silence for Dennis and Jesse Hollifield, another Four Corners Finisher that passed away in January, 2000.

There was plenty of food, desert and many raffle prizes given away at the end of the evening. There was close to $200 in the 50/50 which was split 50-25-25. Our own SCMA Treasurer and 1999 Four Corners Finisher, Jane Usatin. won the 50% for $100.00. Terry Riley was the winner of the other 25% of $50.00, not once but twice. Congratulations to the winners. Terry and her husband Bill were also 1999 Finishers. Terry was on her BMW heading South on the East Coast when a car in the Northbound lane hit a deer and sent it over the center divider. It hit Terry but she managed to keep the bike upright, but had a lot of damage to the fairing.

There were just so many guests and not enough time. We enjoyed the stories from all the riders and certainly look forward to doing this traditional banquet again next year. Looking at the calendar, it will be somewhere around February 17, 2001. Probably same place, same time. It works well for everyone, however, we are always open to suggestions for a location and also for a speaker for next year.
